Taste the best of Oriental Beauty oolong tea
Do you know the fascinating origin story of Oriental Beauty (also known as Dongfang Meiren, 東方美人茶, Eastern Beauty)?
It begins with a Taiwanese tea farmer from Hsinchu County whose tea plants were damaged by leaf hoppers one day. Rather than forgoing his harvest, he heavily oxidized the bitten tea leaves into tea as usual. When he took his tea to a local tea merchant, the merchant praised him for the outstanding quality of his tea and paid him TWICE the price of his usual tea! In the late 19th century, 15kg of Oriental Beauty cost was equivalent to a house in Taiwan.
Because tea makers can only make this high-quality, white tip oolong (also called bai hao, champagne oolong) when the leaf hopper populations are high enough and when the weather conditions are suitable, our Oriental Beauty is handmade in small batches with limited quantities available. Making Oriental Beauty tea is laborious, with tea farmers carefully selecting and handpicking only the leaves attacked by jassids (jacobiasca formosana).
